For a federated system to be successful, it needs to have sufficient technical governance in place to ensure that it can operate efficiently, whilst avoiding the creation of significant burdens on operators that may deter participation. This workshop aims to gather input from operators to identify an optimal level of governance that would deliver the most effective balance.

The workshop will complement the projects being taken forward through the Network+ Flexible Funding. These projects include detailed exploration of Identity and Access Management (IAM), and will provide recommendations on the optimal IAM approach. IAM therefore does not need to be covered in detail here.

• For what technical aspects is this unclear?

3 Levels of a Federation

Should the federation be “one size fits all”, or should we adopt a tiered model that allows different infrastructures to participate with differing levels of constraint? Do we anticipate a combination of “mandatory”, “desirable” and “optional” requirements for participation, or just a single mandatory set?
