Abstract: The trigger is of paramount importance since it is the first
cut applied on any physics analysis. During the LHC Long Shutdown 2
(2019-2021), the ATLAS experiment is undergoing its Phase 1 upgrade with
major changes in hardware (Level-1 Calorimeter trigger, Level-1
Topological trigger, Level-1 Muon trigger, Muon-to-Central Trigger
Processor Interface, New Small Wheel, etc.) and software (migration to
the multi-threaded software framework AthenaMT). This will make the Run
3 startup, scheduled on February 2022, a challenging time. The Run 3
trigger system will exploit all of the capabilities that the new
hardware components will bring. During the period prior to data taking
the trigger priorities will be twofold: define a robust commissioning
strategy for the brand-new systems and support physics from day 1.
